Yep 01:16
You’ve got to describe it to claim it What do you highlight It’s just the curve of an outline A few minutes of night life A land you agreed to That’s something you own That’s never really yours Pale colors Damp then dry Trees tall and Cars that drive A beach you’ve only Been to once Not a hard yes but a yep
3.
Nope 00:38
I’m a kind of Tangent A footpath A houseplant When I’m in the sun I’m light grey A smooth stone In a clean hand I’m slow and pure And sweet and good I read like A brochure And there’s times I say yeah When I wanna say nope
4.
Apple 00:26
There’s not enough Of the left alone And no way to say The thing to say Where are the new vacant lots Where are the new swear words Feel like I’m always Parallel to something Kind of don’t see it Kind of not looking They’re building a new apple While I still eat the old ones
5.
Fishing 01:38
Walking up and down the same set of stairs Day in, night out, not getting nowhere No friends that call, same four spinning walls Taking off work to take a big fall Setting up for failure Waiting for fame to nail ya Can’t settle down or even sleep around Always surrounded by serious clowns Laughing when no one else is around Swapping jokes with the face in the mirror But don’t wait up for the pop charts to hear ya Fortune is calling, inspiration is falling down the stairs On the sidewalk sprawling, teeth everywhere Everyone is here but Something is missing And they wonder why I’d rather be fishing

Trains 01:26
Inside the car is a color I can’t see And the landscape lasts a second And a moment later the tracks are cloudy I sit near the bridge and watch them go by I like things at this level The space between rail clatter The calm of dust Each day is green and brown, bright and then blue The land is weedy and still I’ll never leave, I think, but I could I try to count the steps between Front step and smoke stack, Dirt mound and horizon line, One hour and the next A train rolls by And I think about it Another rolls by I think about it
7.
Baseball 02:02
Ain’t no such thing as everybody wins Want it to be cool to lose Instead of what it really is So I can afford to lose a little more hair So I can be some blank space along a baseline I sip smoke scratch sweat and wait Any real thing I do I do alone A face in the crowd is fine for someone like me who don’t really wanna be seen There are faces I avoid There’s a shadow falling on the field The sky’s a warmer color right before it disappears The light’s come on There’s an echo I’m standing here At absolute zero There’s nowhere I’ve got to be I’m heading home

I Grew Up 01:00
Sometimes I don’t know where I’ve been and don’t remember how it used to be God almighty gonna strike me down someday And it won’t matter what I used to know When the bad things come They come on on like weather My eyes adjusting Like a camera You start to hear the things you couldn’t hear before You blink and double check the things you see I didn’t think I’d be sighing even more I didn’t think I’d feel like a print-out of something When the bad things come They come on like weather I unbutton another button While the air gets hotter I took a blur and I smudged it Slowed it down to a crawl Until like air I ignored it If I grew up that’s how I knew it

Talking 00:42
“Motherfucker don’t waste my time” Humming in color like a neon sign I breathe through my nose Do my work Don’t say nothing The walk home is a dream Birds chatter The creek rolls along The door creaks And I never complain I smile when I’m tired And I lay back and think I’ll find some land of Almost no talking and Motherfucker I won’t come back

Cowboy II 01:52
Complete the poem Laying down in the tall grass Looking at a silver maple While a cat walks up to us When the ice runs out We fill the tray up Complete the body Near a prairie’s edge Near a Live Oak branching Where a breeze can find us The moon is resting in a pendant The moon is cool and grey The moon is just far enough The moon is the only sound Connect the landmarks Fall into the tall grass Pull our caps down low While the day leaves us When the ice runs out We fill the tray up When the work is done We name the mountains We complete the poem We complete the body We hear the moon rise We hear the cat walk up to us

Science 01:18
Smart people need a dumb anthem A dirt track for a clean mind Some freedom ringing they can still tune out Something they could build if they only had the time It’s not a real science It’s just something I saw It’s not a plaque on a wall It’s just something I heard Some people gotta clear their heads And pull the weeds from the dirt Somewhere in the back of their minds Water moving in a straight line It doesn’t come from on high It’s just something I was thinking It’s not the white of a lab coat It’s just something I picked up Some people on a porch at night Some people like a refilled drink Some people steady as a law Some people wrote

Eight 00:51
How far can chaos really go How deep can dumb-as-shit be Do you feel it in your bones Or in your blood when it ain’t what it should be Can you believe the air Can you trust your eyes Do you clean the windshield And just keep driving There are voices you hear And jokes you forget And grass that grows And gets cut above the dead I’ll take it any deep breath any petty theft Any spare change any home any range Any way out any time now
14.
East Boy 01:58
I was waiting for a breeze I was waiting for a thunder The past was more and more less and less than I’d remembered I know I’m covered in a kind of dust I can’t see I know there’s some people that never get clean I was building a fort inside the city lines I was thinking how much I loved the fort every night I know I look like I’m the same guy I know I shrug talk move like I did the last time I disappeared from somewhere I fell asleep I woke up here I went away I came back down here I drove east and I liked it there
15.
Lava 00:50
Swear to water Swear to rocks Watch the planets From the dock Swear to lava Swear to caves Check the weather Hear it rain Sand’s cooling Under night air We’re folding up A folding chair Some wave is moving In the night out there Something we don’t see Is in the air
16.
Vegas 00:55
You keep pouring water Into the ocean You keep finding flowers On the ground You ain’t a part of No country you know You don’t glitter When the light hits you The money’s tender LED numbers And when I have it I feel like someone else For like a minute I’m a billboard I’m a hotel The light hits me Something is lit
17.
Sad Stooge 01:23
When I close my eyes I see the mountains When I open my eyes I’m barely there On the sidewalk kind of humming Walking slowly still tired Skyline like a painted backdrop I’m in a play I’m sleeping through it When the sun is staring And the mountains sit there I look around I”m barely here When the sun is worn out And the mountains are cooling I close my eyes And try to see something On the sidewalk kind of humming Walking nowhere still tired Skyline like a painted backdrop It never ends and it ain’t over yet
